National Association - Welcome

Dear Fellow Alumni:

First, I would like to introduce myself to you and to thank you for electing me President of the Voorhees College National Alumni Association.

I am James L. (Jimmy) Gardner a graduate of the Class of 1969. I am a native of Florence, SC but presently reside in Mauldin (Greenville County), South Carolina. I am and have been married to Rosia (Rotchie) Speach ’71 for thirty six years. We have twin children, Alex and Alexis, who are graduate students at the University of South Carolina.

I am a twenty year retired public school principal who has returned to work as an assistant middle school principal. I am a charter member of both the Mu Pi Chapter of the Omega Psi Phi, Fraternity, Inc. and the 100 Black Men of Upstate South Carolina.

Presently, I am the president of the Voorhees Piedmont Alumni Chapter in Greenville, SC., which served as host for the 2004 Voorhees College National Alumni Association National Meeting. As an alumnus of Voorhees College I have been actively involved with the college since my graduation in 1969.

The newly elected president for the Voorhees Piedmont Alumni Chapter is Kenneth Baxter. Join me in welcoming Mr. Baxter to his new position. I hope my profile of service will exemplify for my dedication to the task that you have given me. You have my sincere promise that I will work to the best of my ability to make our alumni association a strong, successful vital organization.

I hope that you will commit to work with me and with Voorhees College to bring our school back to a high level of excellence.

Below are three areas that will be the focus of my agenda for the coming year:

  • Better communication among all groups - the alumni membership, the alumni chapters and the College Administration.
  • Improved financial planning and financial giving.
  • An increased in the number of Alumni Chapters and an improvement in chapter business procedures.

Thanking you in advance for your support!
