UPWARD BOUND PROGRAM
(website)
The Voorhees College Upward Bound Program is designed for
first generation college bound students from low income
families. The program encourages students in the ninth
through twelfth grades to develop skills necessary for
success in higher education. Voorhees College offers this
program to the students enrolled in the tri county public
schools. Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed
to enhance the academic and college readiness skills of high
school students so that they may successfully complete high
school and enroll/succeed in post-secondary institutions.
Since 1985, Voorhees has enrolled a record number,
eighty-five percent (85%), of its Upward Bound participants
into the regular college program.
Through this program, academic services are provided for
high school students from the surrounding Bamberg and
Barnwell Counties (Denmark-Olar High, Bamberg-Ehrhardt High,
Barnwell High, Blackville-Hilda High, and Williston-Elko
High). Services also include the provision of instructional
skills and individualized tutoring sessions in math,
English, reading, computer skills, foreign languages, and
counseling.
