MUS 120. Concert Choir (2)
This course offers a wide variety of choral
experiences. The Concert Choir performs both on
campus and in the community and occasionally
tours different parts of the United States. The
Concert Choir also serves as a Chapel Choir on
Chapel Services days (Tuesdays). Choir
membership is through audition. Attendance
during rehearsals and performances is crucial to
continued membership.
MUS 210. Voice (Class) (2)
This course presents the fundamentals of
singing for beginning and advanced students, and
focuses on position and poise of the body and
exercises for the development of vocal freedom.
The course also presents the appropriate vocal
literature adapted to each student’s needs and
progress. Prerequisite: permission of
instructor.
MUS 211. Elementary Piano (1)
This course teaches piano technique and
selected musical repertoire for the beginning
student.
MUS 320. Music Instruction (2)
The course teaches individual lessons on
instruments of the student’s choice. Foundations
in techniques of chosen instrument to include:
scales, arpeggios, etudes and sonatas.
MUS 321. Fundamentals of Music/Keyboard
(2)
Rudiments of Music, including rhythm, ear
training, notation, keyboard geography, treble
and bass clef reading.
MUS 322. Music Theory (2)
The integrated study of written theory and
harmony, keyboard harmony, aural theory,
analysis, and literature.
MUS 323. Music History from 1600-1820 (2)
Music Literature, theoretical issues, styles
and performance practice from the early baroque
through the classical Era. Emphasis on the
evolution of techniques, forms and styles, and
on the aesthetic "battlegrounds" of the Age.
MUS 324. Music History from 1820 to
Present (2)
Genres, styles, and issues in the arts, from
the beginning of the 19th century through the
20th century. Regional schools, primary sources
in musical aesthetics are studied. There is
consideration of prominent streams of the 19th
and 20th century musical practice expressed
through late Romanticism, Impressionism,
Atonality, Serialism, Neo-Classicism, and
related movements.
MUS 325. Piano I or Voice I (2)
The fundamentals of singing will be given in
order to develop the correct mechanism and vocal
techniques, (i.e. respiration, resonation,
phonation, articulation and other pedagogical
approaches).
MUS 326. Piano II or Voice II (2)
A continuation of vocal development.
Constructed of major, minor, augmented and
diminished arpeggios, minimum of three to six
songs in English and early Italian. At least two
must be memorized.
MUS 330. or EDU 331. Music for Children
(3)
An examination of objectives, content,
instructional materials, teaching practices, and
procedures related to music on the elementary
school level. The integration of music, movement
education, and graphic expression will assist
the pre-service teacher in utilizing music
within the classroom. Prerequisite: Class rank
of junior and/or admission as degree seeking
candidate in education. (*Note-This course is
also listed under the Division of Education as
EDU330.)
MUS 421. Piano III or Voice III (2)
A continuation of vocal developments. One
operatic or oratoric aria, minimum of three to
six songs in English (Contemporary Black Art
Songs, Spirituals). At least two must be
memorized.
MUS 422. Piano IV or Voice IV (2)
A continuation of vocal development; a
minimum of three to six songs in German. The
course will culminate with an hour solo recital.
MUS 423. Music of African-Americans (2)
A survey of African-American Music from
Africa around the 1600’s through the colonial
period, slavery and up to the present.
MUS 424. Form and Analysis (2)
Analytical techniques and application to
basic homophonic and polyphonic forms.
Prerequisite: Music 321
MUS 426. History of Black Church Music (2)
Biblical and theological perspectives;
hymnological, liturgical and music developments,
issues and practices of Black Church Music.
