READ 100. Reading (Institutional Credit only) (4)
A course for the student who scores below the grade level
of 10.5 on the COMPASS test administered during orientation
for new students, and who must enroll in READ 100.
Enrollment in the course requires four (4) days of class
attendance per week and one (1) day of laboratory work per
week in the Learning Resource Center. The course engages the
student in developing and strengthening comprehension and
vocabulary to function effectively at the college level.
Intensive reading instruction includes vocabulary
development, recalling facts, recognizing and analyzing
relationships between and among ideas, literary and
non-literary interpretations, isolating details, drawing
conclusions, and making inferences. Through systematic and
directed reading instruction and practice, the student works
to become an effective reader. Eligibility to exit the
course requires a minimum grade of "C" in the class and a
minimum score of 10.5 on the COMPASS post-test.
