Safety & Security Department - Crime Prevention Tips

At VC, Crime Prevention and the Safety of Students, Faculty, Staff and Visitors is Our TOP Priority

In order to help protect yourself & your belongings:

  1. Always enter and exit at the front door of your residence hall only.
  2. Never block any exit doors open. Building security can be compromised and could possibly affect resident students safety.
  3. Never give or loan your room key to anyone.
  4. If your room key is either lost or stolen, you must contact security.
  5. Keep your room door closed and locked whenever you are out of your room, even for a few seconds.
  6. If you plan to be away for the weekend, lock away your valuables, or take them with you.
  7. If you are planning to be away from the campus over night or longer, it is required that you sign out of your residence hall, and sign in upon your return.
  8. Never permit individuals into your room that either you or your roommate do not know personally.
  9. Never leave personal valuables (keys, purse, wallet) in plain sight, always lock them away.
  10. Have all large equipment (TV, radios) engraved with your social security number by campus security.
  11. Never leave outside doors to the residence hall propped open.
  12. Always report suspicious persons to hall staff and/or Campus Security by calling (803) 780-1110
  13. If returning to campus after the residence hall close, call Security at (803) 780-1110 for an escort.
  14. Do not leave messages on your door about when you will return.
  15. Keep ground level windows closed or use a safety lock.
  16. Do not leave tempting valuables visible inside your parked car.
  17. Do not put your address on key ring.
  18. Avoid walking alone at night.
  19. Always lock your car.

Safety concerns:
There are risks other than legal consequences to consider when you participate in large, uncontrolled parties.

Theft: opening your home to uninvited guests is an open invitation to thieves as well. Purse snatchers and pickpockets find drunken persons to be easy targets.

Sexual Assault:
Alcohol is involved in 90 % of rapes and sexual assaults. It dulls your judgment and lessens your inhibitions. Crowds provide cover and reinforcement for unwanted groping, touching and more serious forms of sexual assault.

Prefer the police didn't drop by?

  • Keep the noise down - If neighbors complain or police can hear your part a block away, you're likely to see an officer at your door.
  • Stay on your own property - Keep your party in your house/dorm/ or yard. The sidewalk, the grass between the sidewalk and the street are public property. If your guests are blocking the sidewalk or street or drinking on public property, it's a violation.
  • Don't invite more people than you can control - Big crowds are very hard to control. Sooner or later, a violation will occur or party crashers will start trouble. Crowded lawns are certain to draw police attention.
  • Know your guests - Every guest should know a host or be accompanied by someone who knows the host. A lot of trouble is caused by people the hosts don't even know.
  • Always follow the Voorhees College "Crime Prevention" guidelines.
