Voorhees College men's head basketball coach Derrick Mitchell has announced the release of the 2018-19 Tiger schedule, a slate that includes 13 home games and 20 non-conference opponents, including a trip to Florida, where the Bulldogs will play three games in Miami.
"Again we have another challenging out of conference schedule for the upcoming season, which is highlighted by participating in the Faulkner Classic, "said Mitchell. “We also have several regional games versus teams from South Carolina State, Allen and Morris.
"Our non-conference schedule includes games versus teams from the Sun Conference, AAC, GCAC, MEAC (NCAA Div 1) and SIAC (NCAA Div II). ”This should prepare us for a very tough Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) slate that starts with Wilberforce University."
During the preseason the Tigers will participate in an exhibition with Denmark Tech
Voorhees College officially opens its season at home on Oct. 26 against Wilberforce University at Leonard E. Dawson Center, before embarking on a three-game road swing, beginning with Point University on Oct. 31, Nov. 2 and 3rd in Montgomery, Alabama at the Faulkner Classic.
Mitchell's team then comes home for three games against perennial NAIA Division II powers Florida Memorial and St. Thomas University. Voorhees finishes the home stand with a game versus a tough USCAA foe JWU of Charlotte.
During the Thanksgiving holiday break, the Tigers will travel to Sunny Miami Gardens, Florida for a three game road trip. While there, Coach Mitchell likes to use the time not only to win games but also as a bonding experience for the players
The Tigers return to the palmetto state to face neighboring South Carolina State on Dec. 6, then continuing on a four-game road swing, starting with USCAA foe JWU on Dec. 10 in Charlotte, NC
Voorhees College, resumes A.I.I. play in Takoma Park, MD against league opponents Washington Adventist and Fisher College Jan. 12 and 13th, respectively. Following the games in Maryland, the Tigers will make their way to Hiawassee, GA to play Hiawassee College Jan 15.
The Tigers return home to host Fisk Jan. 27, Allen Jan. 28, and Mississippi University Jan. 31 before heading to Nashville, TN to battle the Tigers of Fisk Feb. 4.
Mitchell and the Tigers get a chance to play in front of their home crowd late in the schedule with a four-game home stand, beginning with Morris Feb. 7, followed by Carolina Christian Feb. 9, University of the Virgin Islands Feb. 10 and Edward Waters College Feb. 16.
The Tigers close out their regular road season with conference foe and rival Morris College Feb 18
The 2019 A.I.I. Basketball Tournament will be held Feb 21 -24th in Lincoln, IL.
