Voorhees College presents Coach Derrick Mitchell as the March faculty/staff spotlight
March 14, 2019

Voorhees College Head Men’s Basketball Coach Derrick Mitchell was recently selected as the Voorhees College faculty spotlight for the month of March because of his outstanding coaching season with the Tigers.
The Tigers ended the season with a 14-0 home record, 24-6 overall record, and back to back appearances at the 2018 and 2019 National Association Intercollegiate Athletics (N.A.I.A.) Men’s Basketball Championship Tournaments.
Mitchell said his goal has never changed when it comes to the team. “I want the Voorhees College Men’s Basketball Team to win the National Championship. I never go into seasons with small goals,” Mitchell said.
He said he especially takes pride in the graduation rate of his players. “In my five years here at Voorhees, I have had 15 players to graduate. This is a big accomplishment as a coach because the focus has to be on academics just as much as it is in athletics,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell described his coaching style as tough love. “I am an in your face type of coach that wants the best for each player. I would not be where I am today without them,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell has been at the institution for five years with an overall 96-54 record. In addition, he serves as an instructor of sports management.
