Voorhees College recently held its spring Alpha Kappa Mu Honors Society Induction Ceremony, where 13 students became members of the Mu Epsilon Chapter.
The ceremony was conducted by chapter President LeRon Furtick, a senior business administration major, Vice President Alysha Linder, a senior sports management major, and Secretary Donovan Joe, a senior emergency management major.
The keynote speaker was 2008 graduate Derrick Smoot, a United States Army veteran and founder and CEO of We All We Got (WAWG), an Atlanta -based company.
Smoot delivered an address on creating and motivating yourself to achieve success.“The opportunity to speak at the Alpha Kappa Mu ceremony was an honor. In order to earn membership into this society means these students exhibited hard work and dedication. If my speech reached one student, then I accomplished my goal,” Smoot said.
He currently is the head of Helping HandSS, which is a program that he loves and dedicates all his time. This program provides food, water, clothes, blankets and information to get each individual out of their homelessness one at a time.
Smoot is also a member of the NAACP, Voorhees College Metro-Atlanta Alumni Chapter, Wounded Warrior Project, Atlanta Warrior Peer Support Group, INC Nation (Atlanta INC), SWIF, WORM and many other groups and organizations.
