Voorhees College track and field athlete James Watson qualifies for the 2019 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Indoor Track and Field Championships and Penn Relays.
Watson became eligible for the 2019 NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship, which will be held Feb. 28-Mar. 2 in Brookings, S.D. He is a double qualifier in the triple and high jump competitions.
Currently, he is ranked No. 12 in the country for the high jump and No. 14 in the triple jump. Additionally, he qualified for the 2019 Penn Relays, which will be held April 25-27 in Philadelphia.
Penn Relays is the largest track and field competition, outside of the Olympics, where college and university athletes compete with professional athletes from all over the world in a televised event.
“This is the second year I will be competing in the indoor national championship. Each year, I work to improve my skills and endurance to become the best athlete I can be,” Watson said. “My goal is to increase last year’s scores bringing more attention to Voorhees Track and Field.”
Track and Field Coach Jeffrey Hughes said Watson continues to make him proud. “Our team works on a combination of skills to qualify for competition. Watson has proved himself dedicated and disciplined to go and try and bring home the title,” Hughes said.
Watson, a sophomore majoring in sports management, is a native of Huger, S.C. The Voorhees Track and Field Team’s next competition will be in Conway, S.C., Mar. 14-16 at Coastal Carolina University.
