Voorhees College Liberal Arts Innovation Center and Health Services partner to host Public Health Expo

August 19, 2021

The Voorhees College Liberal Arts Innovation Center (LAIC) for Healthcare Access and Equity and Health Services are collaborating for an inaugural Public Health Expo to be held Thursday, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Leonard E. Dawson Center, on campus.

The expo, open to the public and the Voorhees College family, will feature health education opportunities and screenings. Participants also will meet local health and wellness providers and learn about prevention and treatment of common illnesses and chronic conditions. The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control will offer COVID-19 vaccines to persons who are at least 12 years old.

“We invite the public to join us in celebrating the benefits of good health through the knowledge gained from the various health vendors that will be on-site. The vaccination clinic available during the expo will assist individuals with becoming protected against the current virus negatively affecting our community. We encourage everyone to come out, enjoy the fellowship, and receive health information that will surely improve their lives,” said Kendall Williams, LAIC executive director.

Suzanne Williams, Voorhees College’s nurse and director of health services, said, “I am very excited to be a part of an event that is focused on our students’ health and the health outcomes of the larger community.  Ensuring accessibility to healthcare providers definitely helps narrow the margin of health disparities that our students and community members may face.”

Tiffany L. Grayson, LAIC program specialist and office manager said, “This is a very precarious health environment we have to navigate today. The health disparities and chronic conditions that have been pervasive in this community are still here. People still need health education, especially information on how COVID-19 exacerbates these health inequities. What better way to get the message out than to accompany it with good food and music!”

The Public Health Expo, which will promote good health and wellness, will give participants the tools they need to create healthier lifestyle for themselves and their families. For more information, call (803) 780-1238 or e-mail tgrayson@voorhees.edu.
