Voorhees hits higher enrollment numbers
September 14, 2017
With 235 new and transfer students, the Voorhees College Class of 2021 is the largest freshman class in the last seven years.
New student enrollment has increased by 19% since fall 2016. Additionally, the overall student enrollment has increased over 13%. The current student enrollment is 481 compared to 415 from the 2016-2017 academic year.
Voorhees’ recruiting efforts included phone-a-thons, visits, and three summer start programs. During summer start, students were given the opportunity to register, complete financial aid, tour the school, and meet faculty and staff.
In addition to enrollment increasing, freshman retention rates at Voorhees have improved from 41% to 55%. More freshman from 2016 returned as sophomores this year than the previous year.
President W. Franklin Evans is transforming the institution into a different school of thought that is centered around student learning.
“To ensure that Voorhees College graduates its students in a timely manner, we have introduced a new campus mentor initiative that will allow transfer and freshman students to become acclimated with the institution and gain support from a dedicated staff mentor,” Evans said.
Evans said the administration is continuously working to take the institution to greater heights and welcome students who are in need of a quality education.
The Voorhees College Office of Admissions is currently participating in the South Carolina Educational Opportunity Program to recruit at consolidated fairs throughout the state. Currently, the Office of Admissions is currently accepting applications for the spring semester.
