Voorhees homecoming dubbed a success

Denmark, S.C. – The Voorhees University 2022 Homecoming was dubbed a success as the week concluded with wins by both the women’s and men’s basketball teams and financial donations poured in on Nov. 12. The Voorhees Women’s Basketball defeated Johnson and Wales 74 to 62, while the men’s team was victorious with a 71 to 69 win over Johnson and Wales.

During the basketball games, Voorhees President Ronnie Hopkins was given 24 ceremonial checks totaling more than $23 million. Contributions included gifts from donors and recent grants.

“It has been an electrifying homecoming week,” Hopkins said. “Alums were involved in a number of activities and the hustle and bustle of students and alumni on campus made for a perfect homecoming week, despite a couple of days of rainy weather.”

Hopkins expressed gratitude to those alumni and supporters who returned to campus and made financial contributions. He also enjoyed the homecoming parade, which was an opportunity to build the town and gown relationship. More than 60 units participated in the hourlong parade, which included floats, marching bands and special units representing fire and rescue and vehicle clubs. The parade grand marshal was Ruth Woodliff-Stanley, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina.

“I love a parade and I love to see our friends and supporters helping us to the next level of excellence by giving of their time, talent and treasure,” said Hopkins. “This homecoming, our first in-person gathering after a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, feels like a reawakening. And that feels good!”

Under a sunny blue sky with snow-white glistening clouds and temperatures in the mid-70s on homecoming Saturday, the Voorhees campus was adorned with food trucks, vendors, alumni, students, and staff scurrying to take advantage of the homecoming spirit. Alums brought portable seating to enjoy the parade and the festivities. Thousands of people, attending more than 25 events, were on campus homecoming week to “Remember the Times,” which was the homecoming theme.
