March 06, 2018
The Voorhees College Men’s Basketball Team will be the No. 8 seed in the Naismith Bracket for the 2018 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Men's Basketball Championship Tournament beginning Wednesday, March 7 at 1 p.m. EST.
During the recent 2018 NAIA bracket reveal party, the team found out they will play Indiana East in the first round of the tournament, which will be held at Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Head Men’s Basketball Coach Derrick Mitchell said he and the team are beyond blessed. “I could not have asked for anything better as a coach.
We are taking on the top seed in the championships. We have a lot of work to do but we are ready for the challenge,” Mitchell said.
Sophomore shooting guard Alex Brooks, said to make it to the championship is none other than a dream come true. “My team is going to give it all we have and the fact we are qualified says it all. Now we must put all our hard work and practices into play,” Brooks said.
For senior shooting guard Demitres Evans, he will close out his collegiate basketball career in the NAIA tournament.
“It feels great. This has been the team’s main goal and coach’s objective for us to make it to nationals. Also, this is bittersweet because this is my last semester at Voorhees, but what a great accomplishment to add to my athletic resume before I graduate,” Evans said.
In addition, Evans said he has a lot of weight on his shoulders by being the captain and only senior of the team but he is up for the tasks.
“My responsibilities as the leader of this team are to remind the guys that we got this far by playing as a team so let’s go into the championships the same way, as a team, play hard, and have fun. They need to show all of their skills on the floor while they are out there because they may not get this opportunity again,” Evans said.
Charlene Johnson, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs/director of athletics, said there have been many achievements this year within the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Affairs.
“The bracket reveal party brought Tiger Pride and excitement as we all anticipated who Voorhees would be competing against. The team has set a new standard for men’s basketball by playing hard all season. Coach Mitchell and the team deserve this opportunity to compete in the championships and the institution stands behind them,” Johnson said.
President W. Franklin Evans said he is excited about the accomplishments the players have made athletically and academically.
“The men’s basketball team is reaping the benefits that come with hard work and dedication. Coach Mitchell has done a great job with the team this year and we wish them well at the championships,” Evans said.
The team’s current record is 18-10 and they will arrive at the championships on March 5.
