Voorhees prepares for Founder’s and Inaugural Week

Voorhees College will celebrate the 120th Founder’s Week and the Inaugural Week of the ninth president Dr. W. Franklin Evans April 3-9.

To kick off the week’s activities, the institution will hold its Day of Service throughout the Denmark community on Tuesday, April 4.

The Student Government Association, Pan Hellenic Council, and other campus organizations, as well as faculty and staff, will conduct community service projects at the local elementary, middle, and high school, as well as participate in a campus cleanup.

On Wednesday, April 5, there will be lecture and panel discussion at 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. The discussion will be on the role and relevancy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Local pastors, educators, businesses, and students will engage in dialogue on the role and historical significance of HBCUs. The panel discussion will be moderated by Von Gaskin, meteorologist at WIS-TV in Columbia, S.C.

From 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., a campus cookout and family fun day will be held in the Pecan Grove.

The 120th Founder’s Day Convocation will be held on Thursday, April 6 at 10 a.m. Rev. Dr. Sam Davis, pastor of Beulah Grove Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga. and 1972 alum, will be the guest speaker. 

Following the program, faculty, staff, students, and guests will take a walk to Memorial Gardens, which is located on campus to place flowers on Voorhees’ founder, Elizabeth Evelyn Wright’s grave.

The Inaugural Ceremony of Dr. W. Franklin Evans will be held on Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. in the Leonard E. Dawson Center.

Following the ceremony, there will be an inaugural gala from 7p.m. until midnight. The gala will be a black-tie affair featuring the Voorhees College Concert Choir, dining, and dancing. Tickets for this event are $100 per person.

To conclude Founder’s Week and Inaugural Week, a ministerial prayer brunch will be held on Saturday, April 8 at 11 a.m. in Massachusetts Hall. Tickets for this event are $25 per person.
