Voorhees student wins scholarship in the Black College Quiz Bowl

March 30, 2016

Voorhees College student Desiree Simon recently attended the 10th annual production of the “Black College Quiz Show” series in Atlanta, where she won second place within her group.
The “Black College Quiz Show” is a weekly series of half hour quiz shows hosted by radio personality and comedian Nephew Tommy of the “Steve Harvey Morning Show.” The show features students from HBCUs, who answer questions regarding Black History for chances to win scholarships and prizes.
The show consists of four rounds with three groups of eight students. Simon made it to round three, where she placed second in her group. She took home a $2000 scholarship and a pair of Dr. Dre Beats.
Simon was selected for the show based on an essay that she wrote to apply. Dr. Lakeisha Germany, department head of criminal justice, accompanied Simon on the trip. Germany was very proud of how Simon performed and was even more excited that Voorhees was well represented.
“I chose to nominate Desiree because she is a quick learner and studies really hard; her preparation paid off because she was very witty during the competition,” Germany said.
Simon is a native of Timmonsville, S.C. and is a sophomore majoring in criminal justice.
