Voorhees wins $10,000 grant in “Retool Your School” Competition

May 27, 2015

For the second consecutive year, Voorhees College won a Tier II grant of $10,000 in The Home Depot Retool Your School Competition.

Voorhees won the grant by proposing the creation of a community garden. The purpose of the garden will be to grow fresh vegetables and fruit so that students, employees and the community will have access to fresh sustainability grown produce.

The community garden will also serve as a learning tool for students to help develop gardening skills and teach them about healthy living.

“It is imperative that Voorhees College educate its students, faculty, staff and community about practicing healthy living,” said President Cleveland L. Sellers, Jr.

“In Bamberg County, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death, and the adult obesity rate in Bamberg County is higher than the obesity rate in South Carolina.”

Voorhees was one of the two HBCUs in South Carolina to win a grant. South Carolina State University also received a grant this year.

“The Voorhees faculty, staff and students would like to thank everyone who voted or utilized social media to help the institution win a grant this year,” Sellers said.
